The Vast Majority of Americans Think Democracy is Broken

Today, as I begin to draft this essay, it’s the eve of the Autumnal Equinox, Monday, September 21st, six weeks out from the midterm election on Tuesday, November 3rd, 2026. On Friday, September 18th, President Trump banned three cable media outlets from the White House briefings, CNN, MS NOW, and Politico.
This morning, “Major television networks suspended their rotating pool coverage of President Donald Trump after the White House blocked CNN from serving as the designated pool representative for a presidential trip to New York. They posted their contact info, and said their goodbyes. Lastly, there’s the Facebook Blackout on inauguration day, plus a protest of Trump’s inauguration and news coverage by not watching. What does this really accomplish? This is how I weigh in…”

Not in Service
Since the inauguration of Trump’s second term, he and his minions did not deliver on his promises. None of the election promises, even his immigration plans, caused more deadly harm than solve any of the issues he claimed illegal immigrants caused. Instead, the playbook, Project 2025, which he claimed he didn’t read and knew little about its contents, became the template for his executive orders, appointments to his cabinet, and the stranglehold on Congress. America has become a country in decline.
As I continue drafting this essay, it’s the first day of autumn, and overnight I learned more on how the off-the-rails pronouncement to ban the three cable outlets unfolded. I was not surprised, however more concerned, to learn that Natalie Harp, Trump’s personal assistant, may have been pulled the trigger. Harp, often referred to as the ‘human printer’ for producing paper copies of the news and research for Trump, shared articles from Politico which enraged him. It’s been reported, that without consulting his W.H. Cabinet or other advisors, he made the decision to ban CNN, MS NOW, and Politico.
Harp has access to Trump and unchecked influence. In my opinion, it’s a very codependent and potentially dangerous relationship. In addition to her human printer role, she both monitors social media and often drafts his Truth Social posts that he dictates. It’s been reported that she was responsible for AI-generated memes, including the Obama ‘apes’ racist meme.
Harp & Trump, dangerous liaison
Many critics speculate that Harp, with her access to his private residence and who travels with him, including in the infamous catering truck incident, also provides personal care and functions as Trump’s Oval Office gatekeeper. Oh, My!
It’s been reported, that without consulting his W.H. Cabinet or other advisors and following Harp’s sharing the critical Politico reporting, he made the decision to ban CNN, MS NOW, and Politico.
Later in the day on Friday, karma responded when Trump’s W.H. ban impacted the Press Pool which shares media with all outlets.

Midterms & More: As a blogger and essayist, and citizen journalist, I often find inspiration for a subject to write about in my lived experience, current events, politics, culture, and the metaphors and imagery that pique curiosity and demand my attention. Every morning, City of Madison Metro Buses leave the bus barns to begin their daily routes. As they pass my home, a sign is displayed, Not in Service. The words allegorically described the current state of our political landscape — the broken democracy of Trump and Congress’s failure not in service of the people they were elected to serve. It’s become a self-serving, self-enriching money and power grab.
This morning, as I returned to drafting this opinion piece, I learned of Judge Kelly’s ruling, “to immediately restore press credentials to journalists from CNN, MS NOW, and Politico.”
At least for today, the three-legged stool of the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial check and balances of our government have not collapsed. As a democracy, citizens still have agency. We are protected by the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights, including the Five Freedoms. Though every day, when watching or reading the news, it’s become easier to feel both overwhelmed and powerless. The uncertainty and lack of action by Congress and legislators we’ve elected to represent us in Washington, and in our statehouses, has created an anticipatory anxiety about both our future and protections of our civil rights today.
The Three-Legged Stool of the Checks & Balances of Our Government

To quote Audre Lorde, “Silence will not protect you.”
